Joinery is the art of connecting wood to wood. Nails, screws, pegs, wedges, scarf joints, mortise-and-tenon joints, dovetails, lap joints, housed joints, and complex interlocking joints all solve different problems. A good joint must match the load, wood species, grain direction, moisture movement, tools, and repair needs.
Traditional Japanese woodworking is valuable in this library because it shows how much can be done with careful layout, sharp tools, timber knowledge, and joinery discipline. It also teaches humility: beautiful joints can fail if used in the wrong structural situation or made without adequate skill.
Wood is directional. It is stronger along the grain than across it, and it expands and shrinks with moisture. Joinery must respect that movement.
Layout comes before cutting. Accurate marking, squaring, measuring, and test fitting are what make joints close cleanly.
Different joints carry different forces. Some resist pulling apart, some resist shear, some align parts, some allow disassembly, and some lock only when loaded correctly.

This folder is A1 because stabilized communities can teach woodworking, maintain hand tools, season timber, and build with repeatable joints. A2 adds sawmills, engineered lumber, standardized fasteners, industrial adhesives, and structural engineering.
Start with wood grain, drying, measuring, square cuts, sharpening, simple lap joints, mortise and tenon, pegs, wedges, and glue behavior. Then learn scarf joints, housed joints, frame joinery, roof joinery, and structural load paths.
