Bamboo construction uses bamboo culms, splits, mats, lashing, pins, bolts, joinery, panels, and sometimes engineered bamboo products to make shelters, scaffolds, bridges, roofs, walls, floors, and temporary works. It is attractive in recovery because bamboo can be locally grown, harvested with simple tools, carried by hand, and worked with a mix of carpentry and rope skills.
This folder belongs in A1 when it focuses on small community structures, shelters, scaffolds, farm buildings, and non-engineered local work. Structural design codes, engineered bamboo, multi-story public buildings, certified connections, and formal testing move toward A2 or A3. Bamboo is strong for its weight, but it is variable, hollow, split-prone, vulnerable to insects and rot, and highly dependent on good detailing.
Bamboo is a hollow grass culm with nodes, fibers, taper, and natural variation. It behaves differently from sawn timber. It can be excellent in tension and bending when used properly, but it can split along the grain, crush at connections, decay when wet, and lose capacity when attacked by insects or fungi.
The most dangerous myth is that bamboo is simply "stronger than steel." Bamboo may have a high strength-to-weight ratio, but safe structural design must account for variability, defects, species, age, moisture, connection behavior, and long-term durability.
Treatment helps protect bamboo from insects, but it does not solve rot if the design keeps bamboo wet. Good bamboo buildings keep culms dry: raised above ground, protected by roof overhangs, detailed with drip edges, ventilated, and kept away from trapped moisture. Replaceable parts and visible inspection paths are practical advantages.
The local construction manuals should be read with the bamboo cultivation page. Good construction begins before harvest: choose the right species, harvest mature culms, cure/dry them, treat when possible, and store them correctly.
Most bamboo structures fail at connections, supports, or moisture traps. Lashing can be flexible and repairable. Bolts can be strong but may split culms unless confined or detailed properly. Fish-mouth cuts, dowels, pins, wedges, lashings, and steel connectors each have tradeoffs. A rebuild community should standardize a few proven connection types rather than improvising every joint.
