Site design is the practice of arranging land, water, buildings, paths, gardens, trees, animals, storage, work areas, and human routines so a place becomes easier to live in and maintain. In an A1 stabilized community, good site design can reduce wasted labor, protect soil and water, improve food production, manage waste, increase shade, control erosion, and make daily work safer.
This folder currently contains a document on guerrilla gardening and urban permaculture. That is a useful seed, but site design is broader than urban gardening. Future documents could cover mapping, sectors, zones, sun and shade, slope, soil, water flow, wind, access, safety, privacy, compost placement, tree crops, kitchen gardens, livestock integration, greywater, paths, storage, and phased implementation.
Design starts with observation. Sun, wind, water, soil, vegetation, wildlife, existing structures, foot traffic, drainage, hazards, and neighbor relationships should be studied before major changes are made.
The same element can serve several functions. A tree can provide shade, fruit, mulch, wildlife habitat, wind protection, fuel, and a place for tools or shade-loving plants. A path can also guide runoff, connect work areas, and define zones.
Placement determines labor. Frequently used things should be close and easy to reach. Hazardous, smelly, noisy, or infrequent tasks can be farther away if access and safety are still maintained.
Site design supports gardens, orchards, rainwater catchment, composting, outdoor kitchens, animal pens, tool storage, nurseries, firewood storage, paths, teaching spaces, sanitation layouts, and community work days.
At small scale, design helps one household organize a yard or vacant lot. At community scale, it can guide shared gardens, water harvesting, tree planting, market spaces, school gardens, and neighborhood food resilience.
This folder is A1 because site design assumes a stable place, repeated work, community coordination, and enough time to improve a site across seasons. A0 survival emphasizes immediate shelter, water, food, and safety. A2 and higher folders can cover engineered irrigation, surveying, civil works, and formal land-use planning.
Start with observation, sketch maps, soil health, water movement, sun angles, wind, access, and basic plant needs. Then learn zones, sectors, contour, mulching, compost placement, tree guilds, rainwater harvesting, maintenance schedules, and adaptive redesign.
