Guilds and companion planting are ways of arranging plants so they support each other and the wider growing system. A guild is usually designed around a central plant, often a fruit or nut tree, with nearby species chosen for roles such as nitrogen fixation, pollinator support, pest confusion, mulch production, ground cover, mineral accumulation, or habitat.
This folder includes a plant guild booklet and a polycultures/guilds document. The topic belongs under permaculture because it asks the reader to design relationships rather than think of each crop as an isolated unit. The goal is not to memorize folklore pairings. The goal is to understand functions, timing, spacing, competition, and local ecology.
Companion planting can be useful, but claims about plant relationships vary widely in quality. A good wiki page should encourage observation, trials, and records. A combination that works in one climate, soil, or pest context may fail somewhere else.
Plant guilds are built from roles. A useful design may include food producers, nitrogen fixers, insectary plants, aromatic plants, living mulch, deep-rooted nutrient cyclers, wind protection, or support plants.
Polyculture increases diversity. Mixed plantings can reduce some risks from pests, weather, or crop failure, but they can also make harvesting, spacing, and management more complicated.
Competition matters. Plants can compete for light, water, nutrients, root space, and human attention. A guild is successful only if the total system is easier or more productive than the parts alone.
Observation is the real test. Records of growth, pests, yield, soil moisture, flowering, and maintenance help distinguish a working guild from a pretty diagram.
At A1, guilds can support orchards, kitchen gardens, small food forests, windbreaks, pollinator strips, soil repair, and nursery planning. They are especially useful where a community wants more perennial food, mulch, habitat, and fertility from the same area.
This folder is A1 because it depends on local observation, seeds or cuttings, garden tools, shared labor, and seasonal recordkeeping. A0 users can still use simple companion planting ideas, but A1 allows deliberate design and improvement over several seasons.
Start with local climate, sun, water, soil, pests, and the needs of the main crop. Then learn plant functions, spacing, root habits, flowering times, mulch, nitrogen fixation, and how to run small trials before scaling.
