This folder currently contains simple papermaking-at-home documents, so it overlaps with hand papermaking but sits under materials basics.
The material lesson is that paper is a fiber network. Fibers are separated, suspended in water, formed into a mat, drained, pressed, and dried. The final sheet depends on fiber length, beating, pulp concentration, sheet formation, pressing, drying, and any sizing or additives.
At community scale, paper can be made from recycled paper, rags, plant fibers, and waste materials. Even rough paper can preserve instructions, maps, labels, and schoolwork.
Fibers bond as water drains and the sheet dries. Longer and stronger fibers usually make stronger paper.
Recycled paper is the easiest starting material. Plant fibers and rags may require more cutting, soaking, beating, or cooking.
A mould and deckle shape the sheet. Pressing removes water and improves flatness.
Sizing changes absorbency. Unsized paper may be too absorbent for ink.
At A1, paper and fiber materials support notebooks, labels, packaging, seed packets, filters, pattern templates, wall charts, children’s lessons, and local records.
This folder is A1 because useful paper can be made with simple materials, screens, water, pressing, and drying. A2 papermaking adds chemical pulping, industrial presses, coatings, sizing chemistry, and consistent production.
Start with recycled paper pulp, a screen, a vat, couching, pressing, and drying. Then learn plant fibers, rag paper, beating, sizing, sheet thickness, and storage.
