Fibers, leather, and textiles are basic material technologies for a stabilized community. A community that can make and repair flexible materials can keep tools working, move loads, protect people from weather, and extend the life of scarce manufactured goods.
This folder combines several related skill families: natural fibers, rope and cordage, knots, marlinspike seamanship, leatherworking, and textile reference material. The common thread is tensile material. These are materials that work by being pulled, twisted, woven, braided, stitched, knotted, or laced rather than cast or carved.
The simplest version begins with identifying usable fibers: bast fibers from plant stems, leaf fibers such as abaca, seed fibers such as cotton, animal fibers such as wool and hair, and hide or skin that can be preserved as leather. The practical problem is then preparation: cleaning, drying, retting, scraping, splitting, spinning, twisting, tanning, cutting, sewing, and maintaining the finished material.
Fiber strength depends on length, cleanliness, alignment, twist, and moisture. Short or dirty fibers make weak cordage. Long fibers that are properly prepared and twisted can make surprisingly strong line with very simple tools.
Cordage is a force multiplier. Rope, string, lashings, nets, snares, handles, straps, and sewing thread allow wood, metal, cloth, stone, and leather to become working systems. Knot knowledge matters because different knots solve different problems: joining, binding, stopping, hauling, tensioning, shortening, and releasing.
Textiles are organized fibers. Spinning turns fibers into yarn or thread. Weaving, knitting, felting, braiding, or netting turns yarn into useful surfaces and shapes. Cloth is not only clothing; it can be a filter, bandage, sail, bag, insulation layer, shade, wick, gasket, or reinforcement.
Leather is preserved hide. Its usefulness depends on removing decay-prone material, stabilizing the collagen structure, and finishing it for the intended use. Leather can become footwear, belts, pouches, hinges, bellows, washers, straps, gloves, cases, and tool parts.
At A1, this folder supports daily repair and local production. It helps people make rope, lash shelters, repair packs, stitch clothing, make straps, understand knots, and preserve hides. It also supports other folders: bamboo construction needs lashings, boats need line, agriculture needs sacks and harness, medicine needs bandages, and workshops need belts, pads, filters, and protective gear.
The documents here range from field-level cordage and knots to older textile encyclopedias. That makes the folder useful for both immediate repair and longer-term craft rebuilding.
This is placed in A1 because useful fiber, leather, cordage, and textile work can be done with stabilized community tools: knives, scrapers, simple looms, spindles, needles, awls, drying racks, vats, and local plant or animal materials. Some textile production becomes A2 when it moves into mechanized spinning, weaving, chemical dyeing, rubberized fabrics, synthetic fibers, or large-scale tanning.
At A0, a person may improvise cordage, knots, wrapping, hide use, and clothing repair. At A1, the community can teach the skills, select materials, preserve supplies, and make repeatable products.
Start with fiber identification, simple hand-twisted cordage, basic knots, sewing, patching, and safe knife use. Then learn splicing, whipping, lashing, netting, leather cutting, awl stitching, and basic tanning concepts. After that, move toward spinning, weaving, patterning, finishing, dyeing, and quality control.
For knots, learn what each knot is for instead of memorizing many names. A knot that is excellent for binding may be poor for joining two lines. A knot that holds under load may jam. A knot that releases easily may not be safe for life-critical support.
