Land navigation is the ability to know where you are, choose a route, move safely, and find your way back. It is an A0 survival skill because getting lost can quickly become a water, shelter, injury, or exposure problem.
This folder contains a map-reading excerpt and a star chart. That combination points to two major navigation families: map-and-compass navigation by terrain, scale, direction, and contour; and sky navigation using stars or other celestial references when maps or instruments are limited.
Modern devices are useful, but basic navigation should not depend only on batteries, signal, or fragile equipment. A person should be able to read a map, orient it, estimate distance, identify terrain, follow a bearing, and recognize when a route is becoming unsafe.
Maps are scaled representations of terrain. Scale tells how map distance relates to ground distance. Symbols show roads, water, vegetation, buildings, boundaries, and other features.
Contour lines show terrain shape. Close contours mean steep slopes; wide contours mean gentler ground. Ridges, valleys, saddles, and peaks can be read from contour patterns.
A compass gives direction, but it must be used with attention to magnetic declination, local interference, and the difference between true north, grid north, and magnetic north.
Route finding combines map information with real conditions: weather, fatigue, water, injury, daylight, obstacles, and hazards.
At A0, land navigation supports travel to water, return to camp, avoiding cliffs or flood zones, signaling location, following evacuation routes, and moving without panic. At community scale, it supports search, scouting, mapping, field boundaries, and patrol routes.
This folder is A0 because the individual skill is immediately useful. More advanced surveying, astronomy, map production, and geodesy belong in A1 through A3 folders.
Start with cardinal directions, map scale, orienting a map, reading contours, estimating distance, using landmarks, and keeping track of turns. Then learn compass bearings, declination, pacing, route cards, night navigation, and basic star recognition.
